Boston Community Pediatrics (BCP) is the first nonprofit private pediatric practice in Boston, working to bring equitable pediatric healthcare to the area. studioMLA Architects worked with this groundbreaking organization to help them make their vision a reality. Due to the unique project parameters, the design team worked directly with the founder and contractor to make decisions in real-time based on the tight time frame. Designing a space for a new model healthcare clinic required attention to detail and respect for and understanding the client’s needs.

Located in an old timber and masonry building in Boston’s South End, the design team got creative with the layout to fit an ambitious program. Phase 1 layout included clinical spaces, administrative offices, and a kitchen all in an extremely small space. Given the medical use, the design features light and bright finishes to highlight cleanliness. Accents of exposed existing timber and masonry construction on exterior walls and at the ceiling bring an added warmth to the space. Since being open, the organization has grown rapidly. In 2022, they asked us to help expand their space. Phase 2 goals were to double their size by expanding into the garden level below. The primary design challenge was to make the two floors feel connected, and maintain the collaborative culture that supports their mission. We achieved this connection by incorporating an open stair design as the entry sequence that welcomes the visitor and makes wayfinding clear.
