Location: Cary, NC
Size: - Capacity: - Completion: 2006 When SAS Institute decided to double the size of its child development center in Cary NC, they tasked Bright Horizons and Horizons Design/MLAA with the design, construction, and operation of the expansion. Site constraints dictated the construction of a separate building rather than an extension of the existing building. By separating the existing from the new, we were able to bridge the outdoor environment between the two structures, creating a sense of privacy and shelter to its users. Renewable materials combine with masonry brick cladding to create a harmonious marriage between the new and old, while pairing well with the natural playground. Inside, the center provides classroom space for ages K-5, all of which share an art and science lab, cafeteria, movie room, and a double-height gross motor skills space that has proven to enhance the center flexibility during severe weather days. A more private back-of-the-house loft area contains administration spaces allowing for birds-eye views down over the common spaces. studio MLA Architects (along with collaboration with Bright Horizons) provided programming, conceptual, and schematic design services. A local architect provided working drawings and construction coordination. |
