SAS Institute Expansion
When SAS Institute decided to double the size of its child development center in Cary NC, they tasked Bright Horizons and studioMLA Architects with the design, construction, and operation of the expansion. Site constraints dictated the construction of a separate building rather than an extension of the existing building.
By separating the existing from the new, we were able to bridge the outdoor environment between the two structures, creating a sense of privacy and shelter to its users.
Renewable materials combine with masonry brick cladding to create a harmonious marriage between the new and old, while pairing well with the natural playground. Inside, the center provides classroom space for ages K-5, all of which share an art and science lab, cafeteria, movie room, and a double-height gross motor skills space that has proven to enhance the center flexibility during severe weather days. A more private back-of-the-house loft area contains administration spaces allowing for birds-eye views down over the common spaces.
studioMLA Architects (along with collaboration with Bright Horizons) provided programming, conceptual, and schematic design services. A local architect provided working drawings and construction coordination.
